Arti Garg

PhD ’08

Arti Garg is a physicist, Chief Technologist at AVEVA, and a passionate advocate for representation. Drawing on her experiences as one of the few women in AI and high-performance computing rooms, she has explicitly warned that "the lack of representation in the AI workforce should terrify all of you."

Garg founded Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally (ESAL), a nonprofit that galvanizes civic engagement among STEM professionals. Under her leadership, ESAL centers Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) by building partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations representing groups historically marginalized in STEM. She applied these same principles in her work on the Hayward CA Community Services Commission, organizing diverse constituents to distribute social service funds more equitably.

Garg believes inclusive decision-making is essential for addressing society's challenges. She urges those with systemic privilege to "give voice to the sometimes voiceless." For Garg, cultivating diversity is not a mere institutional checkbox; she says, "Creating a more representative scientific enterprise is about more than scientific progress … It is also about societal progress.
